Everyone wants to come to a fire. The key is to know how to get them there early and how to manage them when they do. This course covers command and control for departments that are staff-challenged, both at the command and operational levels. We will discuss issues and attendant solutions for responders whose “normal operating reality” make it always seems like they are behind the 8-ball when it comes to scene arrival and initial operations. Solutions offered will include the use of automatic aid and mutual aid, proactive departmental mechanisms, mutual policy adoption, and creative methods aimed to reduce game-day uncoordinated and unsafe activities due to the “we don’t have enough guys” or “ we don’t always play with these guys” handicaps. We will introduce proven departmental and command-level mindsets designed to create an operational framework in which a more effective and organized response can become a reality.

This class will address the strategic and tactical operations required to effectively operate in engineered lightweight multiple dwellings. These mid-rise “groundscraper” buildings, often referred to as podium or pedestal construction, are being constructed in many places, including many suburban and rural areas, and create a major challenge to the firefighting forces in the area. The class will focus and revolve around a plethora of questions designed to challenge participants and departments to get out and acquire all the pre-fire street intelligence they can about these very dangerous structures.
